Preparing for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season is here and preparing can be stressful, especially if there is already an active storm looming over us. The best thing to do is prepare your hurricane kit before a storm makes its way to you. This article will give you an idea of where to start, so you’re not running to the store with everyone else just days before landfall.

Here is a list of some things you’ll need:

  • Enough drinking water for a gallon per person per day for a week minimum
  • Canned goods (fruits, vegetables, prepared meals)
  • Manual can opener
  • Snacks (crackers, nuts, peanut butter, etc)
  • Extra garbage bags
  • Toilet paper
  • Matches
  • First aid kit
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Battery operated fans
  • Battery operated radio
  • Battery operated lanterns/flashlights
  • Extra batteries
  • Important medications
  • Fire extinguisher

You may choose to leave some of these items out of your hurricane kit, and there may even be some things you feel you need that I didn’t list. There are some things you can avoid doing to prevent further hazards. Candles and oil lamps are a fire hazard so it’s best to stick with battery-operated lamps and flashlights. One thing that people have done for years, is taping their windows. This actually poses a risk rather than preventing any issues. If a window were to break, the tape would keep bigger pieces together making it much more dangerous.
